by Patrick 2 great comments. Room for one more!

Sarah and I went to see Jack Layton on Friday evening as he lay in state at City Hall. The outpouring of support was impressive.

I believe laying in state is the incorrect phrase when one is not on Parliament Hill.

Wikipedia says that lying in state could mean both lying in the state’s capital or the principal government building(s) of a city. To be honest I haven’t used the expression much but I’ve seen newspapers use it while Layton was in Toronto — that’s what I’ve been basing my use of it on.
