The fact that the Section don’t work for any government or corporation complicates matters but, then again, what would international intrigue be without a little improvisation? That, and you can’t spell espionage without ESP<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the 1970s, alarming reports coming out of the Soviet Union prompted the U.S. Army to launch a secret program investigating psi* abilities. It was quietly headquartered at Fort Meade, Maryland and operated by a couple of physicists under strictly compartmentalized, need-to-know security. Under a new code name, the project was moved to the Stanford Research Institute and, in addition to continuing research, was tasked to provide operational assistance to organizations like the CIA, FBI, and the army’s Defense Intelligence Agency. Much of this operational material remains classified.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A privately-founded “agency<\/em>“, employing much of the same modus operandi, became active a number of years prior to the U.S. Army’s psychic research program. The elusive “agency’s<\/em>” motivations are unclear and the exact amount of time of its existence is in dispute, but some of the research harnessed by its members would be leaked and publicly demonstrated by a group of amateur enthusiasts in Toronto five years prior to the inception of the Fort Meade project. By the time the Stanford Research Institute was involved, those working with the “agency<\/em>” were already veterans. Their clandestine work continues today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
